WEATHER BEAT: Below Average Temps Continue; Daily Chances For Showers and Storms Thru Thursday

Posted

For the last 25 days, Dulles Airport has recorded a high temperature that was below the average high for that date. Over the past 30 days, we’ve only reached 90 degrees three times.

As of right now, I’m continuing to see our below average trend continue over the next week. So far, our hottest months were May and June. Our hottest temperature this year was recorded before the actual start of summer.

While I am not ready to post my Winter Outlook just yet, a lot of people have asked me if this means a bad winter is on the way. A cool summer does not necessarily mean a bad winter is on the way; however, I'm also not ruling it out. In 2002, we had a cool summer and that was followed by very little snow.

For the upcoming week, I am expecting temperatures to remain roughly in the mid-80s with daily chances for showers and thunderstorms. Right now, Tuesday will feature the chance for a few showers throughout the day. Wednesday doesn’t look too bad, but Thursday will feature more showers and thunderstorms. By the weekend, storm chances and humidity go down ushering yet more cool September-like weather.

Granted, September isn’t too far away, but if this trend continues, maybe September will feel like October? Only time will tell, but I’ll have more details in my upcoming Autumn Outlook, so stay tuned.

My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
