The Virginia Department of Transportation reported that the Interstate 66 bridge over Route 29/Lee Highway in Gainesville was not significantly damaged following a fatal accident Tuesday night.

Grant Austin Christensen, 39, of Gainesville was killed after he lost control of his vehicle following a two-car collision on Route 29 and crashed it into a concrete pillar that supports the overpass.

A VDOT district bridge engineer inspected the structure Wednesday morning.

“The vehicle scraped one bridge pier and hit the second,” VDOT spokesperson Jennifer McCord said.“There are some scrapes as you can see, but the concrete held up well and appears no major damage; no repairs to be made.”
