NWS Issues Severe Thunderstorm, Flood Watch for Tuesday

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. and a Flash Flood Watch until 10 p.m. Tuesday for the region.

At 1: 48 p.m, NWS forecasters reported that Doppler radar detected a thunderstorm located near Bealeton moving northeast at 15 mph, which could affect locations between Manassas and Haymarket.

"Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph and small hail can be expected with this thunderstorm, NWS said. " Additional rainfall up to three-quarters inch can be expected."

According to the weather service, tropical moisture will remain over the area this evening.

"After  a couple of previous of heavy shower and thunderstorm activity, only one to two inches of additional rainfall will be needed in targeted areas to produce flash flooding," they said.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely early this evening across the  area; rainfall rates in heavier showers and thunderstorms may exceed 2 inches per hour.
