The 66 Express Lanes are now open for travel, but construction continues throughout the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant Upcoming Traffic Impacts

  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: Route 29 (Lee Highway), Route 28, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway), Route 50, and I-495. Details

  • Installation of overhead gantries and signs
  • Earthwork and drainage along I-66 East and West
  • Constructing noise walls along I-66 East and West
  • Corridor-wide roadway maintenance as needed
I-66 Outside the Beltway

The 66 Express Lanes outside the Beltway are now open from Route 29 in Gainesville to the I-495 Interchange. Work continues rebuilding major interchanges along the I-66 corridor, opening more than 4,000 new park and ride spaces, and expanding trail options for cyclists and pedestrians. ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South from University Boulevard to I-66 

Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One lane will be closed daily for road widening. 

University Boulevard East and West from Route 29 to I-66 

Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One lane will be closed daily for road widening. 

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

I-66 East from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) to the Manassas Safety Rest Area

Monday, January 23, and Wednesday, January 25: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work and drainage work.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South Centreville

Monday night, January 23, through Thursday night, January 26: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed nightly for noise wall work. Traffic will be detoured prior to the closure to Route 28 South, then follow signs to Route 29 North or South.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Route 28 South from Westfields Boulevard to the Braddock Road Overpass

Monday night, January 23, and Tuesday night, January 24: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed both nights for pedestrian guardrail installation. 

Ramp from Route 28 South to I-66 West 

Monday night, January 23, and Tuesday night, January 24: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed both nights for pedestrian fence installation. Traffic will be directed to continue farther south, exit to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, travel about one mile, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from Route 28 South to the 66 Express Lanes West

Monday night, January 23, and Tuesday night, January 24: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed both nights for pedestrian fence installation. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes. 

Route 28 North from I-66 to the Braddock Road Overpass

Wednesday, January 25, and Thursday, January 26: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work. 

Ramp from Route 28 North to the 66 Express Lanes East 

Wednesday, January 25, and Thursday, January 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes. 

Ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East 

Monday night, January 23: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for roadway work. Traffic will be directed to Route 29 South (prior to the closed ramp), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto Route 29 South, then continue for about one mile and follow signs to I-66 East.

I-66 East from east of Route 28 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) 

Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes of eastbound I-66 and the left lane of the eastbound collector-distributor road at Route 286 will be closed nightly for overhead bridge work and noise wall work. 

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

I-66 East from east of Route 28 to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) 

Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes of eastbound I-66 and the left lane of the eastbound collector-distributor road at Route 286 will be closed nightly for overhead bridge work and noise wall work. 

Ramps from I-66 East to Route 286 North and South 

Monday night, January 23, through Wednesday night, January 25: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramps will be closed each night from midnight to 4 a.m. for a traffic shift. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North or South. Note: This closure will not be implemented when the closure conflicts with other detours. 

Ramp from the 66 Express Lanes East to Route 286 North and South 

Monday night, January 23, through Wednesday night, January 25: Midnight to 4 a.m.

The ramp will be closed each night for a traffic shift. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes. 

Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 West

Wednesday night, January 25: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for a traffic shift. Traffic will be directed to I-66 East, exit to Route 50 West, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West. Note: This closure will not be implemented when the closure conflicts with other detours.

Route 286 North from Route 29 (Lee Highway) to Fair Lakes Parkway

Thursday, January 26: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Two lanes will be closed for a traffic shift. 

Ramp from I-66 East to Route 286 North 

Thursday night, January 26: Midnight to 4 a.m.

The ramp will be closed for a traffic shift. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North. 

Ramp from Route 286 North to I-66 West

Thursday night, January 26: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for a traffic shift. Traffic will be directed to I-66 East, travel to Route 50 West, then stay to the right to I-66 West.

Route 286 South from Fair Lakes Parkway to Route 29 

Friday, January 27: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Two lanes will be closed for a traffic shift. 

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 286 South

Friday night, January 27: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for a traffic shift and barrier work. Traffic will be detoured prior to the closure to Route 286 North, stay right to exit to Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive, turn left at the traffic signal onto Fair Lakes Parkway, then stay left and turn left at the traffic signal onto the ramp to Route 286 South.

Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East

Friday night, January 27: Midnight to 4 a.m.

The ramp will be closed for a traffic shift. Traffic will be directed farther south to Route 29 North, turn left at the second traffic signal, and follow signs to Route 286 North, then exit to I-66 East. 

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50

Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed nightly for overhead bridge work. 

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 50 West 

Friday night, January 27: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for noise wall work and barrier removal. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs to Route 50 West.

Random Hills Road West from Fairfax Hills Way to Monument Drive

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON - CITY OF FAIRFAX

I-66 West from Jermantown Road to Route 50

Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27: 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed nightly for overhead bridge work. 

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA

No significant traffic impacts are planned.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING

495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal (start of the Express Lanes) to I-66 

Monday, January 23, through Wednesday, January 25: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The northbound 495 Express Lanes will be closed each night for overhead bridge work and a traffic shift. 

Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North 

Monday night, January 23, through Friday night, January 27: Midnight to 4 a.m.

The ramp will be closed each night for overhead bridge work. Traffic will be directed to I-495 South, take the exit to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, stay to the right to Fairview Park, take the left fork to Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal, then stay to the right following signs to I-495 North.

Ramp from I-66 East to the 495 Express Lanes North

Monday night, January 23, through Friday night, January 27: Midnight to 4 a.m.

The ramp will be closed nightly for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes. 

I-66 West at I-495 

Monday, January 23, through Wednesday, January 25: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

One lane will be closed each night for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages during the overnight hours. 

66 Express Lanes West at I-495 

Monday, January 23, through Wednesday, January 25: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The road will be closed each night for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes. 

I-66 East at I-495 

Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages during the overnight hours.

I-495 North at I-66

Thursday, January 26, and Friday, January 27: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Three lanes will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages during the overnight hours.

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West 

Friday night, January 27: Midnight to 4 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for overhead bridge work. Traffic will be detoured farther south to the exit to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, stay to the right to Fairview Park, take the left fork to Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal, stay to the right following signs to I-495 North and I-66, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from I-495 South to the 66 Express Lanes West 

Friday, January 27: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.
