Off-Duty Officer Shoots Gainesville Man who was Recklessly Handling Gun

UPDATED: Reckless Handling of a Firearm | Brandishing – On September 25 at 5:50 pm officers responded to the 14400 block of Club House Road in Gainesville (20155) to investigate a shooting.

The investigation revealed an unknown man, later identified as the accused, was walking along the roadway in the above area pointing a firearm at passing motorists.

One of the motorists, identified as an off-duty federal law enforcement officer with the Department of Homeland Security Federal Protective Service, pulled to the side of the road a short distance away and observed the accused firing into the air. The off-duty officer warned nearby homeowners before contacting police.

The accused continued walking before being confronted by the off-duty officer as he approached the driveway of a nearby residence. At that point, the off-duty officer identified himself as law enforcement and issued commands to the accused to drop the weapon.

During the encounter, the off-duty officer fired his department-issued weapon which struck the accused in the upper body. Officers arrived at the location shortly after and provided immediate first aid to the accused until rescue personnel arrived and transported him to an area hospital where his injuries were determined to be non-life threatening.

No additional injuries or property damage were reported. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Following the investigation, detectives obtained charges against the accused, identified as Pete Donovan Womack, who was served by Fairfax County police at the hospital.

All parties are accounted for and there is no danger to the community. Residents in the area can expect a heavy police presence as the investigation continues.
