The Woodbridge community have been expressing their sadness at the loss of a beloved coach and teacher.
Fred Moore, math teacher and varsity football coach (defensive coordinator) for the Woodbridge Sr. High School Vikings, passed away at a home football game, Friday night.
The Vikings were playing a home game against Massaponax, Friday night, Sept. 17, when the varsity coach collaspsed on the field. Attempts to revive him by EMTs on the field proved unsuccessful. The game was thus suspended.
Later it was announced that Coach Moore had passed away. Moore was in his early to mid-thirties.
"I am saddened to share the news that Coach Fred Moore, a beloved math teacher and varsity football coach, passed away tonight after collapsing on the football field," stated Woobridge Sr. High School Principal Heather Abney in a message posted on her Twitter account.
"Words cannot express the grief the Woodbridge community will feel from this loss. I am in contact with his family to provide support. His wife would like everyone to know that Coach Moore passed away doing what he loved."
Above the message Abney wrote: "We are heartbroken and devasted."
Abney notes that the Prince William County Schools Crisis Team will be provided support at the high school next week.
Woodbridge Sr. High School's Head Varsity Football Coach Jimmy Longerbeam has created a Go-Fund me to help Fred Moore's wife, Jessica Moore, pay for expenses associated with Moore's passing.
The funds will be used to send him back to his home town in Alabama for burial and any other needed costs.
The GoFund me has already exceeded the goal of raising $15,000 with $21,480 raised as of 10:15 a.m., Monday.
